May 2025 at the Academe
A Quick Look at the Academe classes coming up next month.

Food reveals character in many ways that clothing does. A man with meat on the sideboard and ale for breakfast is of higher status than a man who only has porridge in a pot. A lady who offers up decorative pineapples on her supper table is following the height of fashion. Above all else, the people of Regency era England followed the seasons for their meat, produce, fish and poultry.
This workshop will go into detail about seasonal foods.

No matter where or when a story is set, keeping it internally consistent is key to reader enjoyment – and that means that the author needs to know a lot about the space that their characters live in, before they start writing (preferably…). The way to achieve that is to go through a world building process at the start – it makes the author’s job easier, and produces happier readers in the end.
This course comprises a series of lessons which walk the participant through the process of world building for regency romance – covering:
- Just what is world building?
- Why do you need it?
- How does that work, when you are writing in this ‘real’ world?
- Where to start – the decisions you need to make.
- World building questions.
- Capturing those decisions, and the research which may result – creating the ‘encyclopedia’ of your world.
- Maps – understanding where things happen in your stories.
- Keeping your regency world consistent.
- Applying this to series, as well as standalone books.
