Today’s featured Beau Monde author is
Barbara Monajem!

Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. After publishing a middle-grade fantasy, she settled on historical mysteries and romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa). Often there’s bit of fantasy mixed in, because she wants to avoid reality as much as possible.

Barbara used to have two items on her bucket list: to make asparagus pudding and to succeed at knitting socks. She managed the first (don’t ask) but doubts she’ll ever accomplish the second. This is not a bid for immortality but merely the dismal truth. She lives near Atlanta with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.

Cover image for LORD BELLWEATHER'S LADY: A dark-haired woman in a red gown stands looking pensively off into the distance as she stands on a sandy beach at night. A dark-haired man in black boots, tan breeches and an open white shirt and a gold, embroidered waistcoat stands protectively behind her. The background shows purple waves beyond the beach and a bright gold and fuscia light emanating from behind them. The night sky and beach are sprinkled with sparkling stars.

What do you love best/interests you most about the Regency Era?

Barbara says, “It’s an exciting time, what with the French Revolution and everything that resulted from that–both the desire for change and the opposition to it. Also, the women’s clothing is tolerable (and I don’t mean just easier for heroes to remove). The clothing of the 18th Century is often cumbersome (if gorgeous), and that of the Victorian Era seems reflective of excessive restrictions. The Regency feels to me like a first attempt at a wider, more open way of life, which allows me to make the struggles for change a part of my stories.”

What do you like the most about The Beau Monde? How long have you been a member?

Barbara says, “I’ve been a member for many years…over 10? Maybe. I love the many, many research resources and the helpfulness of the members. There’s always someone who can answer the knottiest question.”
