No matter where or when a story is set, keeping it internally consistent is key to reader enjoyment – and that means that the author needs to know a lot about the space that their characters live in, before they start writing (preferably…). The way to achieve that is to go through a world building process at the start – it makes the author’s job easier, and produces happier readers in the end.
