Class Description
Much has been written about the indoor servants of a great house, but an aristocratic estate of the Regency era needed as much work outside as inside. While a great house might have an indoor steward and an outdoor steward, these were people who worked directly with the master of the house, as did any landscaper or architect. This two week course will focus more on the people who did the actual labor, looking at both the small estate and the large, and touching on wages as well as duties and where these folks lived. We’ll cover:
– Introduction—Small Estates vs. Large Estates
– The Stables: Coachmen, Head Grooms, Grooms, Stable Boys, Farrier, Wheelwright, Saddler
– The Gardens: Groundskeepers, Master or Head Gardener, Under Gardeners, Weeders, Shovel Work
– The Woodlands: Gamekeepers and Foresters
– The Outbuildings: Dairy, Brew House, Ice House, Still Room
– The Home Farm: Cattlemen, Shepherds, Ploughmen, Orchardmen, Pigmen
– The Other Laborers: Gatekeeper, Woodworker, Stonemason, Bricklayer, Plasterer, Glazier, Plumber, Thatcher, Washer Women, Itinerant Workers (harvest, tinkers, drovers)
– Summary—Estate Villages
